Ingredients

  • 150 grams Malt o Milk biscuits or any plain, sweet tea biscuit or malt biscuits
  • 250 grams Choc Ripple biscuits
  • 4 tablespoons Milo 30 grams
  • pinch salt
  • 280 grams Maltesers or Whoppers, Mighty Malts or any type of chocolate coated malt balls
  • 80 grams salted butter melted
  • ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk

For the topping

  • 300 grams milk chocolate broken into single pieces
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • extra Maltesers to decorate

Instructions

  • Line a 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) tin with baking paper.
  • Place the Malt o Milk biscuits into a large mixing bowl and use the end of a rolling pin to break them into small pieces.
  • Place the Choc Ripple biscuits into a food processor and blend until mostly smooth, with a few lumps remaining. Add them to the mixing bowl.
  • Reserve one cup of the Maltesers and set them aside for later. Crush the remaining Maltesers using a rolling pin and add them to the mixing bowl.
  • Add the Milo and salt and stir to combine.
  • Add the melted butter and condensed milk and stir to combine.
  • Using the back of a metal spoon, press half of the slice mixture into the prepared tin. Gently press the remaining (whole) Maltesers over the top.
  • Add the remaining slice mixture to the top and use the back of a metal spoon to firmly press the slice into the tin.
  • Place the chocolate pieces into a glass or microwave safe bowl. Melt the chocolate pieces in the microwave at medium power in short, 30 second bursts, stirring in between, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Add the oil and stir to combine.
  • Pour the melted chocolate over the top of the slice and top with extra crushed Maltesers to decorate, if desired. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight before cutting the slice into pieces.

Notes

  1. Maltesers are delicious chocolate-coated spheres of malted milk that can be found in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Canada. The centre has a crunchy, honeycomb-like texture with the flavour of malted milk that dissolves in your mouth. They can be found online and in supermarkets in the chocolate aisle. If you can’t find them in your country, Whoppers, Mighty Malts or any type of chocolate coated malt balls can be used instead.
  2. For the biscuits, I use a mixture of Arnott’s Choc Ripple biscuits and Malt o Milks for extra chocolate malt flavour. You could substitute these for another plain, sweet tea biscuit like Graham Crackers, Marie biscuits or malt biscuits.
  3. Milo is an Australian chocolate-malt flavoured drink powder that is typically consumed by mixing with milk or hot water. In this recipe, it is used to add extra malt flavour to the slice. It can be found in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. In the UK or US, Ovaltine powder or another chocolate-malt flavoured powder can be used instead, but adjust the quantities to taste.
  4. Be sure to use sweetened condensed milk.
  5. Be sure to line the tin with baking paper before adding the slice mixture. This ensures that the slice can be easily removed when set.
  6. Storage: this slice can be kept in an airtight container the fridge and is best eaten within 5 days, or frozen for 2 months. If freezing, the Maltesers on the top of the slice may lose their crunchy texture, so leave them off if you intend to freeze the slice.
  7. To cut the slice, use a large, sharp knife that has been run carefully under hot or boiling water and dried. This will help to slice through the top chocolate layer, without breaking it.
  8. Don't skip the setting time! The slice needs at least 3 hours in the fridge to set. Otherwise, it will be too soft to slice.
  9. You will need one large bag (280g) of Maltesers to make the slice, plus extra if you want to decorate the top (or to eat as you go!).
  10. Since there are minimal ingredients in this recipe, good quality ingredients are best! Choose a good quality milk chocolate, as it will affect the final flavour. I love to use Cadburys chocolate for no-bake slice recipes.
  11. Melt the chocolate gently in the microwave or in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water. If the chocolate is overheated, it will seize.
  12. Please note that the nutrition information is based on the slice being cut into 16 pieces, with one piece being one serve. The nutritional information is an estimate only and does not take into account any additional toppings or sides served with the slice.
  13. This recipe is made using Australian cups and spoon measurements. Due to cup sizes varying from country to country, I advise adjusting if necessary.
