Maltesers are delicious chocolate coated spheres of malted milk that can be found in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Canada. The center has a crunchy, honeycomb-like texture with the flavour of malted milk. If Maltesers can’t be found in your country, Whoppers, Mighty Malts or any type of chocolate coated malt balls can also be used instead.

Arnott’s Choc Ripple biscuits are used to form the base of the slice. They are a famous Australian chocolate cookie that can be located in most supermarkets. If you are browsing from another country, any other plain sweet chocolate cookies can be used in equal quantities (approximately 2 cups of crushed cookies).

Rice Bubbles (or Rice Krispies) add a chewy texture and help to hold the mixture together.

Milo is an Australian choc-malt flavoured powder that is typically consumed by mixing it with milk or hot water. It can be found in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. In the UK or US, Ovaltine powder or other chocolate malt flavoured powder can be used instead, but adjust the quantities to taste.

Step by step guide

Step 1. Crush the cookies. The Choc Ripple biscuits can be crushed in either a food processor or with the end of a rolling pin. Leave some chunks for extra texture.

Reserve one cup of whole Maltesers for later and chop the rest into very small pieces.

Step 2. Mix the dry ingredients together. All of the dry ingredients except the Rice Bubbles and the whole Maltesers are added to a large mixing bowl and combined.

Then the melted butter and condensed milk are added and mixed.

Step 3. **Stir in the Rice Bubbles after stirring through the butter and condensed milk to prevent them from losing their crunchy texture.

Step 4. The slice mixture is then firmly pressed into a 20 x 30 cm (8 x 12 inches) or 20 x 20 cm slice tin using a metal spoon. Start with half of the mixture before layering the remaining Maltesers and covering with the remaining mixture. This leaves some whole Maltesers for both a pretty visual effect when sliced, as well as crunchy texture.

Step 5. Top with chocolate. Top with the melted chocolate mixed with a little oil and decorate with extra, crushed Maltesers if desired. Cover and refrigerate until the slice is solid (3 hours or overnight is best). Then, slice and serve!

Expert tips

  • Be sure to line the tin with baking paper so that the slice can be easily removed.
  • Storage: this slice can be kept in an airtight container the fridge and is best eaten within 5 days, or frozen for 2 months. However, the slice is best eaten within 1-3 days, as the Rice Bubbles will lose their crunch and chewy texture over time.
  • To slice, use a large, sharp knife that has been run carefully under hot or boiling water. This will help to slice through the top chocolate layer without breaking it.
  • The mixture will feel sticky as you press it into the tin. This is normal. It will become firmer as it sets in the fridge.
  • You will need one large bag of Maltesers for the slice, plus extra if you want to decorate the top (or to eat as you go!).
  • Since there are minimal ingredients in this recipe, good quality ingredients are best! Choose a good quality milk chocolate, as it will affect the final flavour. I love to use Cadburys chocolate for no-bake slice recipes.

FAQs

Should I keep this slice in the fridge?

Due to the butter and condensed milk, this slice should stay refrigerated. Keep it in the fridge for up to 5 days. The slice can be removed from the fridge just before serving and eaten at room temperature.

How do you keep chocolate from cracking when cutting?

Add a small amount of vegetable or canola oil to the melted chocolate before pouring it over the slice. This helps to prevent cracking when sliced. Once the chocolate has set, use a hot and dry knife which will help to glide through the chocolate layer without cracks.

Hi Debbie! I just checked on both mobile and desktop and the quantities are changing for me when I hit ‘2x’ or ‘3x’. The amount of the condensed milk changes from 1 cup of condensed milk to 2 cups or 3 cups respectively. If you are referring to the notes beside the ingredients (ie 1 x 395g can), these are just helpful notes and the recipe card won’t alter them when you press the buttons to adjust the quantities. For example, the recipe says 1/3 cup melted butter and then in the notes section it says (80 grams). When you hit the buttons to multiply the recipe, the card will only adjust the 1/3 cup quantity, it won’t change my notes. If you are still having trouble, clearing your cache/cookies may help. I hope that helps! Andrea 🙂
